The majority of robotic vacuums require regular maintenance. This includes emptying the bin (and sometimes, rinsing it) and cleaning the cameras and sensors. Also, they have to be connected to a power source. Many have smartphone apps to schedule, adjust settings and more.

The iRobot Roomba 980 is the latest in the line of top-of-the-line robotic vacuum cleaners that are an essential part in any modern home. This model is extremely powerful suction as well as a HEPA filter that'll assist anyone suffering from allergies. It also has an extremely powerful battery that can clean for two hours before returning to its dock automatically when the bin is full.

Smart mapping is another feature that helps it identify areas of your home that require attention, and then creates a cleaning path to get around them. This technology is extremely effective in navigating around toys left on the floor or furniture legs that are sticking out from underneath objects. It also has a camera that snaps the Roomba back to the real world when it begins to drift away from its original location.

iRobot has also introduced a new set of rollers under the Roomba's bottom, which do not have bristles, and thus tend to be more resistant to tangles than previous models. These rollers are also taller and can be placed under beds or couches with low sides. They're designed to make the model more movable on various floor types.

The Roomba 980 differs from other models of high-end quality by its brand new dirt detection feature, which uses a camera in order to identify dirt that has been embedded. This is a nice improvement over the previous version which relied on a sensor-driven pseudorandom coverage technique to bounce around the room and clean at least three times from different angles.

The Roomba 980 performed well in our tests on carpets and hard floors. Its score on the low pile carpet was impressive, and it got a very excellent score on mid pile too. It did a fair job of removing pet hair, but it had a difficult time with very thick and long pet fur that was stuck together.

Despite these slight limitations, the Roomba 980 remains one of our most efficient robots, and isn't even close to being as expensive as the other top-of-the-line models in this list. It comes with many of the features you'd expect from a flagship model, but it doesn't have all the fancy apps or smart home integration you'd get from other top models.

The iRobot Roomba can be set up quickly and is ready for use immediately. After taking the yellow bin insert and the battery pull tab from the undercarriage, you simply plug it into the wall socket or one of its Home Base docking stations, hit the "Clean button" and let it work. It will automatically return to its dock when the battery runs out or it's stuffed with debris, and it also has indicators at the top to indicate when its bin is full or it requires recharging or its Wi-Fi signal is not working.
